Joan Weissman's artistic career has included a variety of media from porcelain sculpture to major public arts installations. Noted especially for her modern rugs, Weissman also creates terrazzo, tapestries, fabrics, and product design. Her work is often featured in such magazines as INTERIOR DESIGN, HALI, WESTERN INTERIORS, PARIS HOME and VERANDA.

Weissman sees her work as a collaborative process, both in the production of her textiles and the relationship with her clients. Close communication with her weavers ensures the faithful reproduction of each line, delicate arabesque, or subtle texture. The integrity of the artisans is always taken into account. Collaboration is also essential as she works directly with architects and designers to develop site-specific rugs.

"I have always been most attracted to the applied arts, so when I started to paint, I wanted my original gouaches to lead to the creation of useful objects. Textiles, which I have long collected and studied, became the means to that end. My imagination is not isolated. Like any piece of art, my rugs are enriched by their surroundings, and in turn, they enliven the space for which they are created."

"My involvement in the arts allows me to cross borders of time, place, and culture. Ceramics introduced me to global connections long ago; the craft of weaving also has a universal language with roots in the earliest civilizations. Experiments with technical and aesthetic innovations bring the decorative arts into our modern age."
